object story

Photograph simple object on the simple background. There are certain restrictions in the term of style. You may use only one object on the simple background. The whole idea behind the project is to tell a story with single object. Try to illustrate or present concept, try to show emotion or introduce us to some kind of problem. Go from simple yet smart solution. Sometimes only certain types of framing can illustrate some kind of concept. Let the photograph speak for itself.

conceptual line

To tell the story with the pencil I decided to go for simple visual presentation and simple concept. I firstly experimented with the pencil as the object, I was breaking it down, painting, sharpening it etc. until I figured what could be visually interesting and decided to communicate something with the broken pencil. I went with the concept everything broken can recover and present it in a manner that lower part of the pencil is broken up top and is being opposed to the sharp pencil. Between the two there is a spacing due to people needing time to recover. Black background is communicating how dark recovering can be, but that still does not mean we can not do it.

Since this was my first project done in the studio environment, it required a lot of research how to best way possible position the upper and bottom portion of the pencil to be easy to control the light and to achieve the unified look through both portions. I decided to use the clay for bottom part and thread for the upper which I fixed using two classic stands. This allowed me to just manipulate the position of the light until I reached the look I was satisfied with. Read more about it in the process.
